You Think You Really Know Me: The Gary Wilson Story is a documentary about the experimental musician Gary Wilson, directed by Michael Wolk. The film documents Wilson's career during the late 1970s/early 1980s and his return to the public eye in 2002 after two decades of self-imposed exile. It was shot entirely in DV, with 35mm, 16mm, and 8mm archival footage. The film was screened at several sold out independent theaters in 2005, but has not yet seen DVD release. SYNOPSIS Twenty-five years ago, Gary Wilson self-recorded YOU THINK YOU REALLY KNOW ME in his basement. The album was called brilliant, visionary, and…. insane. The same was said of Wilson’s live appearances, when he dazzled audiences with his musicianship and shocked them by appearing in his underwear, covered with flour, singing to and destroying female mannequins. Now, with the 2002 reissue of YOU THINK YOU REALLY KNOW ME by Motel Records, Wilson has re-emerged from decades of obscurity to rock and shock again. This is the story of the life, disappearance and re-birth of a funky, funny and fierce American original. |
